The LNA Team and Board would like to thank all our corporate partners and members who attended the first ACT General Meeting of the year on Thursday 16 March at the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) who also hosted the event.
It was a well-attended meeting with most of our ACT members present. It was wonderful to Marc Patterson from Platinum Corporate Partner, Andreseans Green there as well as Rebbecca Johnson from Sydney based member 1300apprentice. LNA Chairwoman, Judy Bates and Operations Manager, Kim Aquilina also made the journey to the ACT to help launch their year.
Judy Bates opened the evening by welcoming corporate partners and members to the new year and informed them of the exciting projects the LNA is undertaking in 2017. A presentation was made about the LNA Landscape Excellence Awards for 2017 outlining the changes that had been made to the Award categories in conjunction with the feedback from the ACT membership, which was well received. It was mentioned that this year the Awards ceremony will be held at the prestigious Westin Hotel, Martin Place Sydney on Friday 27 October and how it would be great to have not only ACT entries in the Awards as well as a number of tables at the ceremony.
Scott Umbers from CIT did a presentation on the new training packages for Landscape construction and parks and gardens apprentices. During this presentation it was also mentioned that two CIT students had won the recent National Worldskills challenge event in Melbourne and would be now attending the International Worldskills challenge in Abu Dhabi later in the year. The two students who won, Alex Halls and Douglas King, attended the meeting and had a question and answer time about the recent win as well as their preparations for the Challenges ahead. Both young men were wished all the best by the entire membership and were encouraged to do Australia and the Landscape Industry proud.
Finally the meeting had a question and answer time with the Chairwoman Judy Bates, Board Members Dan Cusack and Martin Rolfe, and Kim Aquilina LNA Operations Manager. Questions were tabled about the future of the LNA in Canberra and the LNA's vision for the ACT. It was mentioned that the LNA is planning to have a 'Christmas in July' event to promote and celebrate the ACT branch of the LNA. It was perceived from the floor that current members did not feel that the LNA had a strong brand recognition in Canberra and to achieve this they would like to see some marketing done in Canberra and the surrounding region. This was taken on board and will be discussed further at a Board Level.
After this the meeting paused for some networking and refreshments and the atmosphere of the evening was relaxed and enjoyed by all in attendance.
