On Tuesday, figures were released saying that there are only 282,000 apprentices across Australia, down from 515,000 in 2012, a drop of 45%. The Business Council of Australia, The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Australian Industry Group are calling on the Commonwealth and State Governments to recommit to the funding of a new National Partnership Agreement or face an even sharper downturn in the number of apprentices.
On Tuesday morning these statistics were a hot topic on many talkback radio stations with Building, Electrical, Carpentry and Plumbing Trade apprenticeships being the focus of attention in these discussions.
The LNA Admin team took the initiative to call through to the Ray Hadley Morning show on Radio Station 2GB, currently the No.1 Radio programme in its timeslot, to make the public aware that the Landscaping Industry also needs new apprentices and that our industry has a lot of diversity in skills and training and is a great career to pursue.
Daniel Beeby called on behalf of the LNA Admin Team and was put almost immediately to air. Ray was very pleasant and accommodating discussing the Landscaping trade for almost 3 minutes (which is quite a long time for a random caller) and allowed Daniel the opportunity to get his points across. At the end of the call Ray asked for and re-announced the LNA phone number and encouraged people to call us if they would like to consider a Landscape apprenticeship.
After the call, the LNA had numerous enquiries from young men, parents and grandparents about work experience and apprenticeships. We also received a request from a High School to attend a Careers day to explain the advantages of working in the Landscaping Industry. This will take place in June and the LNA has agreed to attend and may seek out other opportunities like this.
The LNA will continue to work hard to ensure the longevity of the Landscaping Industry by attracting good, hardworking young men and women to take up a Landscaping apprenticeship.
